Austin Wayne Self Heads to Southern Illinois for His Second Dirt Race of the Season

RichCorbett_Illinois_AWS 3(Mooresville, N.C.  September 2, 2015-) Austin Wayne Self (AWS) driver of the No. 98 AM Technical Solutions Ford for Mason Mitchell Motorsports (MMM) gears up for the final dirt race of the 2015 season at the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds.

The ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards will be the only national touring series racing on Labor Day Monday, September 7th. Last month Self raced inside the top-five all afternoon at the Illinois State Fairgrounds until a last lap incident resulted in the 19-year-old finishing in the 10th position.

“The dirt races are quite unpredictable,” Self stated. “You never know what kind of race were going to see. I knew Springfield was going to get wild with a last lap restart and unfortunately we got caught up in an incident in the final corner.”

Rich Corbett Photography“You always see a lot of green flag racing on the dirt tracks so it’s important to have a great long run car and not abuse your equipment early.”

“We’ve had great runs over the last five races, unfortunately we have had rotten luck. I really want to get AM Technical Solutions, Pirate Energy and all of the guys at MMM another win before the season is over.”

This Monday’s race marks the 10th of 11 races for the Calypso Lemonade Short Track Challenge for the 2015 season. AWS sits second in points, trailing leader Kyle Weatherman by 50 markers. Self’s worst finish on the short tracks in 2015 is a 10th place finish.

With four races remaining the championship battle is heating up. 2014 Scott Rookie of The Year AWS sits third in points 180 behind leader Grant Enfinger. Self gained 45 points with his tenth place finish at Springfield last month.

Austin Wayne Self Adds Another Texas Company to His Race Team Partnerships

Pocono_TXHSFBRacecar driver and Texas native, Austin Wayne Self is proud to announce a new partnership with another local Texas brand, Texas Tea®. Texas Tea® joined up with the young driver just before his race at Pocono. They were featured on Self’s 98 AM Technical Solutions car and will continue to have a presence throughout the race season. Self was particularly excited about this new partnership because he’s been a fan of Texas Tea® for years. He stated that he couldn’t wait to share the different flavors with his team members at the shop and try new flavors himself.

“My family and I have been fans of Texas Tea® for a few years now. We tried it for the first time at a TCU football game, where they had special edition bottles with Jerry Hughes and RG3, 2 owners of Texas Tea®, on the label. Since moving to North Carolina to be closer to the shop and my team, it’s been really important to me to stay close to my roots. I’ll always be a Texan no matter where I am and partnering with companies like Texas Tea® helps me remember that. We already drink a lot of sweet tea around the shop, now we have the best Texas Tea®. I bet we set records!” – Austin Wayne Self

AUstin_TXTeaTexas Tea® is an all natural blend of Organic, Fair Trade white, green, or black tea with local Texas ingredients such as Nacogdoches blueberries, Poteet strawberries, Fredericksburg peaches, Austin Goodflow Honey and more. Each flavor represents a city in Texas famous for a certain type of fresh produce.

Since its inception in 2009, Texas Tea® has gained the support of Texas native NCAA football stars Jerry Hughes, Robert Griffin III and Brian Orakpo, who now play in the NFL! Austin Wayne Self will be the first race car driver to join the effort in raising awareness about Texas Tea® and while he hasn’t reached NASCAR yet, his fan base is the largest in his series.

Texas Tea® is now growing outside of Texas adding distributors and retailers such as Sprouts, Target and Walmart. By featuring DSC02391Texas Tea® on the 98 AM Technical Solutions machine and sharing his love for the tea brand, Self hopes to raise awareness on the east coast of Texas Tea®. His fan base back in Texas is sure to hear about it also.

Texas Tea® is one of five Texas based companies to join Self during his 2015 campaign. The young driver is spreading the word about unique and innovative companies that are expanding out of his home state. MichiganSelf has one prior start at the 2.0 mile track located in Brooklyn, Michigan. The 2014 Scott Rookie of The Year started fourth and finished ninth in the 2014 June race.

“Michigan is one of the best tracks on the ARCA schedule,” Self stated. “You carry so much speed down the straightaways into the corners. It’s a place where you can move around and search for speed as a driver.”

“MMM was bad fast here last year and finished second. I know we will be a contender for the win. We just need to have luck on our side all weekend.”

“These guys at MMM have worked so hard all year long and they deserve a trip to victory lane!”
Coming off of a 15th place finish at the Pocono Raceway last weekend Self and the No. 98 team enter Michigan fourth in driver points 135 behind leader Grant Enfinger.

Pocono Raceway Review: Austin started from the 15th position but by the end of lap one he worked his way inside the top-ten. Self’s march forward continued running as high as second at lap 27. Self and the No. 98 team positioned themselves for a potential top-five finish until four laps remaining when Self had a problem with the right front and hit the turn one wall. Self Takes Over the Second Championship Points Spot with Third Consecutive Top Five Finish in Federated Auto Parts 200

Salem_ShortTrackSpotlightSalem, IN — Self and the number 98 AM Technical Solutions Ford Fusion earned their third consecutive top 5 finish this weekend at the Federated Auto Parts 200 at Salem Speedway. Self and his team rolled into Salem with a car setup and strategy that they were confident would keep them running in the front of the pack. A few incidents early on and throughout the race gave the team a few challenges to overcome in order to stay in the top but, they were able to make it through those obstacles to finished in the fifth position.

“When we came to Salem Speedway to test last weekend we decided to set the car up for really long runs due to the 100 plus lap green run we experienced last season at this track. An early incident in the first few laps turned us around and gave us our first challenge. And then a few cautions throughout the race broke up the long runs. When we got into some good green runs we made our way up the field pretty good. I think if the flag count had been a little different we could have finished on top,” Self explained.

98Pass_ShortTrackSpotlightThe weekend began on Saturday with poor weather conditions. The scheduled practice sessions and qualifying were canceled due to the consistent rainfall. The starting lineup for Sunday’s Federated Auto Parts 200 was determined by 2014 season owner’s points putting Self and the 98 AM Technical Solutions Ford in the pole position. Self would lead the pack to the start of the weekend’s big race for the second time this season. Contact competition started early and Self found himself spinning on the fifth lap around. Several cars were involved in the incident that drew the first caution of the race. Self reported some chatter in the right front and took a quick trip to the pits. Self restarted the race in the thirteenth position minus a right front shock. He had some work ahead of him to make it back up towards the front of the pack. With a few longer green runs and some intense and exciting side-by-side racing, Self made his way back up to the top 6. Announcers and fans were on their feet as Self battled and went three wide on the backstretch to overtake the 4th position with under 50 laps to go.

98PitStop_ShortTrackSpotlight“If those final few cautions hadn’t come out and we would have been able to stay under green then the finish would have been a different story. We took a chance on our setup and unfortunately the flags just didn’t fall our way. I’m really proud of my team and crew though. We went from starting in the front, all the way back to 13th within the first few laps, and ended it in the top 5. The best part is that this weekend allowed us to take over second place in the point standings and we’re only 95 points behind the leader. We’re on the climb and we’re making awesome progress” – Austin Wayne Self

Self made three pit stops throughout the race during the caution flags with the final pit stop being the most important. The pit crew was able to give him four fresh tires and make an air pressure adjustment to send him on his way for the final few laps of the race. Self lost one position during the final pit stop but was able to make it up in the final sprint to the finish. The team’s 5th place finish earned them the second spot in the Championship Points race. They now only sit 95 points behind points leader Grant Enfinger. Can Self pass Enfinger with his run at Talladega? Find out this weekend. The Talladega race will be broadcast live on Fox Sports 1 on Friday, May 1st at 5:00pm Central. Don’t miss the race and Austin’s chase for the first spot!

Austin Wayne Self Back at the Home Track

Austin Wayne Self returned to his home track for the first time since moving to Mooresville, NC to further pursue a professional racing career. The 2014 ARCA Rookie of the Year competed in the Pro late Model race at Central Texas Speedway on Saturday, March 28th. This was the young driver’s first time back in a Late model since the beginning of the ARCA Racing season. Self was excited to be home and back at CTS where his stock car career took flight. He even pulled off a top-five finish.

AWS_Dont' Mess with TXSelf’s return to the local Austin area race track attracted long-time fans and sponsors to the race event on Saturday. Among those supporting the young driver were the owners and guests of the popular energy shot drink, Pirate Energy. The Pirate Energy group cheered Self on as he piloted the #07 Pirate Energy Pro Late Model and even hosted an after-party after the race action to celebrate the team’s top 5 finish.

The fourth place finish wasn’t so easily earned however. Self struggled with mechanical issues throughout the day. “The last time this Pro late model saw a track was at the race in Georgia that we competed at a few months ago. With ARCA testing in Nashville making my late model practice schedule tight, I don’t think we really had a chance to work out all the kinks. The team worked extremely hard to repair damage taken on in Georgia and I know with a little more track time before, we would have had the best car out there. We still did a great job and I know we all had fun and that’s what’s most important to us for these CTS races,” explained Self.

Stands_SunsetDespite having trouble getting through turns during the race Self was able to pick up positions during the race and put on a show for the crowd. Starting in the 7th position Self quickly took the #07 Pirate Energy car to the top. Charging forward and taking on other drivers on the inside Self battled to the second position and remained there for the majority of he race. A late caution came out causing the rest of the pack to catch back up with the leaders. Some shuffling during the restart put Self back in the fourth position with only a few laps to go. Even without the win the #07 team received praises for the exciting racing they displayed from fans and partners. Newcomers to the track became race fans for life and that really is what the sport is all about.

The next race that Self and the #07 Pirate Energy car will compete in will be Saturday, April 4th at the Fairgrounds Speedway in Nashville. Fans can follow Austin on Facebook and Twitter to catch announcements about live broadcasting for this event and for behind the scenes photos and videos.

“We struggled with getting the car back on track, we worked so hard to get back out there it looked like it was going to be an uphill battle, but once we got out there I had a blast! Austin Wayne Self Scores his 8th top 10 of the 2014 Season

In 12 starts throughout 2014 Austin Wayne Self and the AM Technical Solutions Dodge for Cunningham Racing has secured 8 top 10 finishes. This past weekend at Pocono Raceway AWS scored an 8th place finish after starting 11th in the Modspace 125.

In a limited 50 lap race, in which only 1/3 of the starting field finished on the lead lap, Austin Wayne Self powered through the lineup to close out the day with a strong effort from the 22 team. The name of the game this past weekend was rain, and bets were made to beat the storm!

“We had a good car in the race, we had a pit strategy in place to race hard until the rain came, but it never rained, so that threw us off half way through the race. We were running P4 and it just didn’t play out for us to be in the top 5. Cautions really weren’t towards our advantage, but we recovered and made it a race.”- AWS

Ultra One Representatives with ARCA CarThe 22 AM Technical Solutions team took pride in a solid top 10 finish for the day with race partner Ultra One Cleaner. Austin Wayne Self commented, “I really enjoyed meeting everyone from Ultra One- they brought some great products out to the hauler and we will definitely be using them throughout race weekends. “We raced at Berlin last year, and we have a good chance of running up front there. It’s a short track so I am confident there, its going back to my roots and I feel good about what we are bringing to Berlin.”- AWS
