Austin Wayne Self Post Race Report: SuperChevyStores.com 100 at the Illinois State Fairgrounds

AWSRacing_Springfield(Mooresville, NC, August 24, 2015–) Austin Wayne Self (AWS) driver of the No. 98 AM Technical Solutions Chevrolet for Mason Mitchell Motorsports (MMM) positioned himself for a solid top-five finish in the ChevySuperStores.com 100 at the Illinois State Fairgrounds Sunday afternoon.

Self was battling for a top-five finish on the final lap when mayhem ensued in the final corner. The 2014 Scott Rookie of The Year was caught up in a last lap incident relegating him to 10th in the final running order.

“I knew it was going to get crazy during that restart with two laps to go,” Self stated. “Anything goes on the final lap and everyone was battling hard in turn four and a couple of guys made contact and unfortunately we got caught up in the wreck. Our car was really good on the long runs, I wished we had a long green flag run to finish the race.”

“It’s unfortunate, we positioned ourselves inside the top-five all day long and to have it slip away in the final corner is very disappointing. These guys at MMM work around the clock to prepare good racecars.”

“We still have four more races to get back to victory lane in 2015. I think we’re going to be pretty strong down the stretch.”

Rain was the name of the theme Sunday morning at the 1.0 mile dirt track shortening ARCA practice by 25 minutes and canceling Menards pole qualifying. That meant the field would lineup based off of 2015 owners points placing Self fifth on the grid for the 100 lap event.

When the green flag waved on the 16th race of the 2015 season the caution quickly waved as the field was slowed by two early cautions in the first 12 laps.

Springfield_2On the ensuing restart at lap 14 Self would get trapped on the outside line and lose three spots pushing him back to the seventh position. The Austin, Texas native would exert patience and worked his way around the 69 and 16 to move back into the top five before the caution waved for the third time at lap 31.

Crew chief Danny Johnson brought Self down pit-road for four Hoosier racing tires and fuel. The No. 98 team sent AWS back to the track in the sixth spot.

Self spent the second half of the race saving his equipment positioning himself for a sprint to the finish. Self began catching Frank Kimmel and Josh Williams for the runner-up spot at lap 75. Self was able to move around Kimmel before smoke erupted from the back of the No. 25 car which would bring out the caution.

A series of late race cautions set up a two lap sprint to the checkered flag. Self was battling for a top-five finish in turn four on the final lap when drivers made contact and the second year driver got caught up in the incident. Self’s No. 98 would sustain right front damage and would cross the finish line in the 10th spot.

With his 12th top-10 finish of the 2015 season Self was able to gain valuable championship points on leader Grant Enfinger who finished 21st and now trails Enfinger by 180 points with four races remaining in the 2015 season.

The ARCA Racing Series will enjoy a weekend off before gearing up for the final dirt race of the 2015 season at the “Magic Mile” the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds for the Southern Illinois 100 on Monday, September 7th. The race will be live on the ARCA Radio Network beginning at 2:30 p.m. ET.. ARCA will also have live timing and scoring for all on-track activity presented by AM Technical Solutions and Pirate Energy.

Austin Wayne Self Earns 10th Top-10 Finish of 2015, Moves Into Second Place in Championship Points Race

Pocono (Mooresville, NC, August 3, 2015–) Austin Wayne Self (AWS), driver of the AM Technical Solutions No. 98 for Mason Mitchell Motorsports earned his 10th top-10 of the 2015 ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards season at the Pocono Raceway, Saturday afternoon. Self finished a career best seventh in four starts at the Pocono Raceway.

“Seventh isn’t the finish we wanted to leave Pocono with,” Self said after the 50 lap event. “We had a great strategy pitting under the first caution. Unfortunately the caution came out with 20 laps remaining and that changed our hand.”

“We were able to avoid the big accident on lap one and come away with a top-10 finish.”

“Big picture wise it was a great day, we moved into second in points. I’m looking forward to heading back to another short track next weekend at Berlin.”

Friday afternoon in Menards pole qualifying presented by Ansell Self timed in ninth quickest for the 50 lap event on Saturday.

When the green flag waved at Pocono mayhem quickly followed on the first lap. Several of the front running cars were involved in an accident in turn two. Self was able to maneuver the No. 98 through the carnage unscathed.

Pocono_1Crew chief Danny Johnson brought Self down pit-road under the caution for fuel only. Self would restart in the 18th position. Two laps after the lap nine restart Self worked his way back into the top-10 in the eighth position.

Self continued to work his way through the field and moved back into the top-five at lap 18. Self would race his way into the third position until the second and final caution of the afternoon waved at lap 27 for debris.

Self would bring his No. 98 car down pit-road one final time for four Hoosier tires and fuel. Self would pass two cars during the final three laps to secure a seventh place finish and his 10th top-10 finish of the 2015 ARCA season.

With the finish Self moved into a tie for second place in ARCA championship points with Tommy Hessert. Self now trails point leader Grant Enfinger by 185 points with six races remaining in the 2015 schedule.

Next up for the ARCA Racing Series is the Federated Auto Parts 200 at the Berlin Raceway Saturday, August 8th beginning at 8:50 p.m. ET. Austin Wayne Self No. 98 AM Technical Solutions ModSpace125 Event Preview

aws(Mooresville, N.C.  July 28, 2015-) With a ninth place finish last weekend at the Lucas Oil Raceway, Austin Wayne Self (AWS) driver of the AM Technical Solutions No. 98 earned his ninth top-10 finish of the 2015 season and tied his longest streak of consecutive top-10’s of the 2015 season (3). Now AWS and Mason Mitchell Motorsports (MMM) turn their attention to the 2.5 mile, three-turn Pocono Raceway located in Long Pond, Pennsylvania.

The ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards visited the “Tricky Triangle” six weeks ago. The track has remained the same, the distance has not. The June race was a 200 mile, 80 lap race. This weekend’s race is a 125 mile, 50 lap sprint which will change the strategy for the teams.

“The August race is very different than the June race,” Self added. “The June race you can pace yourself and take your time. The August race is a full on sprint and you have to race 100% every lap.”

“This race always seems to come down to fuel-mileage and strategy at the end of the race. The team who has no problems and plays the strategy right seems to end up in victory lane here.”

“MMM’s enjoyed success at Pocono, I know we will have a great car and a chance for the victory come Saturday.”

With seven races remaining in 2015, AWS still remains in the championship fight sitting third in ARCA drivers’ championship trailing leader Grant Enfinger by 160 points.

Chassis: Self will be back behind the wheel of chassis No. 593. AWS raced chassis No. 593 last month at the Chicagoland Speedway to a 12th place finish. Chassis 593 has five prior starts with oneaws2 win, four top-5 finishes and six top-10’s.

AWS at Pocono: Self has three prior starts at the Pocono Raceway, earning one top-10 finish last August when he finished 8th. The second year driver has an average finish of 15.7 at the “Tricky Triangle.”

The ModSpace 125 at the Pocono Raceway will be live on Fox Sports 2 beginning Saturday, August 2nd beginning at 3:15p.m. EST Arcaracing.com will have live timing and scoring presented by Pirate Energy and AM Technical Solutions for all on-track activity.

Austin Wayne Self Rally’s Late for Top-10 Finish at Lucas Oil Raceway

(Mooresville, NC, July 27, 2015–) Austin Wayne Self, driver of AM Technical Solutions No. 98 for Mason Mitchell Motorsports used a late race surge Friday evening to earn his ninth top-10 of the 2015 ARCA Racing Series season.

The 2014 Scott Rookie of The year was able to pass Chase Briscoe on the final lap to secure the ninth position at the checkered flag.

new2“I think we all were a little surprised the final 77 laps went without a caution,” Self stated after the race. “We took two on our pit-stop and expected a caution with 50 to go. Unfortunately, the caution never came. The whole MMM crew did a great job all day adjusting the car and never gave up until the end.”

“I am looking forward to heading back to Pocono on Saturday. We had a great race going in June until a late race incident out us in 15th.”

Early Friday in Menards pole qualifying presented by Ansell, Self qualified the No. 98 in the 17th position for the 13th race of the 2015 season.

When the green flag waved Self quickly began moving his way through the field. In only four laps Self moved up four positions into 12th.

AWS continued to race in 12th until lap 60 when leader William Byron put the second year driver one lap down. The evening’s first caution would come out one lap later. Unfortunately the leader put another car one lap down before the caution came out, trapping Self one lap down.

Shortly after halfway Self slotted himself in the free pass position when the caution waved for the 42 of Bo LeMastus. Self would receive the free pass and would be back onnew the lead lap.

The races final 76 laps would go caution free. Self would pass two cars during the evenings longest run to secure his ninth top-10 of the 2015 season by finishing in the ninth position.

Next up for the ARCA Racing Series is the ModSpace 125 at the Pocono Raceway Saturday, August 2nd. The race will be live on Fox Sports 2 beginning at 3:15 p.m. ET. ARCA will also have live timing and scoring for all on-track activity courtesy of arcaracing.com

Texas Tea® joined up with the young driver just before his race at Pocono. They were featured on Self’s 98 AM Technical Solutions car and will continue to have a presence throughout the race season. Self was particularly excited about this new partnership because he’s been a fan of Texas Tea® for years. He stated that he couldn’t wait to share the different flavors with his team members at the shop and try new flavors himself.

“My family and I have been fans of Texas Tea® for a few years now. We tried it for the first time at a TCU football game, where they had special edition bottles with Jerry Hughes and RG3, 2 owners of Texas Tea®, on the label. Since moving to North Carolina to be closer to the shop and my team, it’s been really important to me to stay close to my roots. I’ll always be a Texan no matter where I am and partnering with companies like Texas Tea® helps me remember that. We already drink a lot of sweet tea around the shop, now we have the best Texas Tea®. I bet we set records!” – Austin Wayne Self

AUstin_TXTeaTexas Tea® is an all natural blend of Organic, Fair Trade white, green, or black tea with local Texas ingredients such as Nacogdoches blueberries, Poteet strawberries, Fredericksburg peaches, Austin Goodflow Honey and more. Each flavor represents a city in Texas famous for a certain type of fresh produce.

Since its inception in 2009, Texas Tea® has gained the support of Texas native NCAA football stars Jerry Hughes, Robert Griffin III and Brian Orakpo, who now play in the NFL! Austin Wayne Self will be the first race car driver to join the effort in raising awareness about Texas Tea® and while he hasn’t reached NASCAR yet, his fan base is the largest in his series.

Texas Tea® is now growing outside of Texas adding distributors and retailers such as Sprouts, Target and Walmart. By featuring DSC02391Texas Tea® on the 98 AM Technical Solutions machine and sharing his love for the tea brand, Self hopes to raise awareness on the east coast of Texas Tea®. His fan base back in Texas is sure to hear about it also.

Texas Tea® is one of five Texas based companies to join Self during his 2015 campaign. Austin Wayne Self Earns First ARCA Career Victory at Winchester Speedway

Austin Wayne Self Earns First Career ARCA Victory at Winchester

(Winchester, Ind, June 28, 2015–) One week ago Austin Wayne Self (AWS) saw his first career win slip away due to a cut right rear tire in the closing laps at Chicagoland Speedway. Fast forward one week later and the driver of the No. 98 AM Technical Solutions-Pirate Energy Ford for Mason Mitchell Motorsports (MMM) would not be denied victory. Self took the lead on a late race restart and led the final six laps en route to his first career win in the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards at the Winchester Speedway.

Self wrestled the lead away from Brandon Jones on a late race restart with six laps remaining and never looked back. The win comes in Self’s 36 start in the ARCA Racing Series. The win also marks MMM’s second win in the series. Their first win came one year ago at Chicagoland with driver/owner Mason Mitchell behind the wheel.
“We had a good car,” Self said. “My team was making sure I was focused. You don’t get too many chances to be in position with six laps to go in second on a restart. They were just making sure I was up on my game.

“On that last restart, I definitely feel like we had the car to win,” Self said. “It’s awesome. We finished second to Frank Kimmel here in 2013. This was always the place that I really wanted to win. I had a lot of family and friends here. I love this place a lot. The racing is always fun. To be able to come home with a win is really big for me. This MMM crew never gives up and I am glad we could get the No. 98 back in victory lane”
Two years ago Self finished runner-up in just his second ARCA Racing Series start at the historic half-mile located in Winchester, Indiana.

Owner Mason Mitchell was one corner away from a Winchester victory in 2014 before he and Jones made contact in the final corner battling for the win.
“It was pretty dramatic,” Mitchell said of the finish Sunday. “It was basically last year, only reversal of roles. He was well aware of that and I’m pretty sure the other team was too. I thought it was clean just like last year. You do what you have to do nowadays to win races.”

“Austin has done a great job all year long and has improved so much behind the wheel. It was really cool to see a lot of his family in victory lane celebrating with him.”

Persistent rain at Winchester canceled the first ARCA practice along with qualifying Saturday afternoon at the ultra-high banked half-mile. The lineup would be set based off of 2015 owner’s points which would put Self and the No. 98 team in the seventh position.

When the green flag waved on the Herr’s Chase The Taste 200 trouble quickly ensued as the caution waved on lap 1 for an incident involving the No. 58 of Michael Lira.

xlarge-660x400On the ensuing restart Self passed two cars on the outside to move into the top-five at lap 18. The Austin, Texas native would continue his march toward the front and move into third at lap 42. Self would ride in the third positon until the caution waved at lap 79. Under the direction of veteran crew chief Marc Browning Self brought the No. 98 down pit-road for two tires and fuel. The No. 98 crew sent Self back out in the seventh position.

It only took the 2014 Scott Rookie of The Year one lap to move back into the top-five on the lap 85 restart. Self picked up three positions and moved into fourth. AWS would ride in to third positon until the afternoon’s fourth caution at lap 139. Self made his final trip to pit-road under caution for four tires and fuel.
With 30 laps remaining Self found himself in the second position behind leader Jones and a mirror full of Grant Enfinger when the final caution came out with 12 laps remaining.

On the afternoon’s final restart at lap 192 Self and Jones rubbed fenders giving Self the lead for the first time with six laps remaining. The 19-year-old would not relinquish the lead and he would go on to become the seventh first-time winner in the last seven races in the ARCA Racing Series.

With the win AWS now leads the Calypso Lemonade Short Track Challenge. Self’s worst finish in five short track starts in 2015 is sixth at Toledo in May.

Next up for the ARCA Racing Series is the Iowa ARCA 150 at the Iowa Speedway Saturday, July 17th. The race will be broadcasted live on Fox Sports 1 beginning at 8:00 p.m. CDT. Arcaracing.com will also have live timing and scoring for all on-track activity.

Austin Wayne Self is Confident Racing on Ultra High Banked Winchester Speedway

Short track(Mooresville, N.C.  June 23, 2015-) Last weekend at the Chicagoland Speedway, Austin Wayne Self (AWS), driver of the No. 98 AM Technical Solutions Ford for Mason Mitchell Motorsports (MMM) was headed towards tying his career best finish in the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards. Self was running in the second position until contact with Matt Tifft cut his left-rear tire resulting in a 12th place finish.

Self and the MMM crew turn their attention towards Indiana’s fastest half-mile the Winchester Speedway located in Winchester, Indiana for the Herr’s Chase The Taste 200.

In 2013 Self turned heads at the Winchester Speedway finishing runner-up in just his second ARCA Racing Series event. The finish put the Austin, Texas native on the map nationally.

“We came so close to winning this race two years ago,” Self stated. That race really put me on the map as a driver and I was able to get a lot of notice from different people in the garage.”

“Our short track package has been excellent in 2015, our worst finish is sixth at Toledo last month. We had a great test earlier this week at Winchester and learned a lot that we can apply to the race this weekend.”

“The MMM team is really hungry for our first win together and I thought we had a great chance last weekend before the contact with the 52. I really like our chances this weekend to end up in victory lane. MMM has some unfinished business at Winchester.”

The race also marks the fifth race in the Calypso Lemonade Short Track Challenge for 2015. Self is second in Short Track points only five points behind Kyle Weatherman. Self’s average finish in four short track races in 2015 is an impressive 4.0.

MMM finished second last year at Winchester with driver and owner Mason Mitchell behind the wheel at the ultra-high banked track.

short track_2Chicagoland Review: Self started from the 4th position and would race in the top-five all afternoon. During his only pit-stop at lap 65 the No. 98 crew gained Self valuable spots and sent him back on track in the third positon. On the final restart Self made a three-wide pass for second and race in the second position until 20 laps to go. Tifft made contact with Self’s left-rear tire resulting in a flat tire. Self brought the No. 98 home in the 12th positon.

Chassis: Self will race chassis No. 588 out of the MMM stable. Chassis 588 has nine prior starts earning four top-five finishes and seven top-tens.
