Austin Wayne Self, AM Racing ready to roar in the Motor City

BROOKLYN, Michigan: Fresh off a solid top-15 finish in the NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series (NGOTS) race this past Thursday night at Eldora Speedway, Austin Wayne Self (@AustinWSelf) and his AM Racing team return to pavement racing for Saturday afternoon’s Corrigan Oil 200 at Michigan International Speedway.

Self and his Mooresville, N.C.-based team are upbeat about motoring to the Motor City aiming to deliver their third top-10 finish together this season just outside of Detroit.

“Michigan is a pretty cool race track,” said Self. “It’s a fast place with wide lanes and provides plenty of opportunities to pass – like a superspeedway.

“As fast as Michigan is though, it’s also a momentum track and you need to have that momentum in the draft to make that pass, especially on the straightaways.”

Self will make his fourth start at the 2.0-mile and is eager to build on his track-best finish of 11th last August. His worst truck finish in the Irish Hills is 16th in his track debut in 2016.

Additionally, the Austin, Texas native has two ARCA Menards Series starts at Michigan with two top-10 finishes and a ARCA track best of third in 2015.

Self chalks up his solid finishes at Michigan to balanced race cars and confidence behind the wheel.

“You have to be on your game at Michigan,” added Self. “One slip and you can lose a lot of time. Sometimes, it feels like every lap is a qualifying run. If you get into the pack, you find yourself battling back and forth for position thanks to the benefits of momentum and the draft.

“That provides good racing and ramps up the intensity level too. We’re bringing one of our best trucks to the track, so hopefully, we can have a good finish.”

The Corrigan Oil 200 marks the final race of the regular season and while the odds are stacked against the team to be apart of the Playoffs, Self says his team doesn’t plan to change their approach from the regular season to the Playoffs.

“I have a lot of respect for the competitors in the Playoffs and I will race them with respect, but we still need to make our noise too,” added Self. “We have a great race team with talented people and a great group of marketing partners.

“If we’re in a position to contend for the win or a good finish, Playoffs or not, we’re going for it. The Playoffs are about the championship contenders, but we definitely want to use these upcoming races to make our own noise too.”

Texas Department of Agriculture’s GO TEXAN program will support Self in his 77th career Truck Series start.

GO TEXAN, celebrating its 20th Birthday this year, represents Texas agri-business on state, national and international levels by building recognition with the GO TEXAN mark.

In 76 NGOTS races, the 2014 ARCA Menards Series Rookie of the Year has one top-five (second at Daytona 2017) and six top-10 finishes. The Texan maintains an average finish of 18.1 during his three years of competition.

The Austin, Texas native is nestled 13th in the championship standings with eight races remaining.
