Austin Wayne Self to drive Modified Class in NASCAR Whelen All-American Series

Austin Wayne Self today announced the addition of the Modified class to his NASCAR Whelen All-American Series schedule at Thunderhill Raceway in Kyle, Texas. He will race for the 2011 NASCAR A-Line Modified championship with Crew Chief J.C. Umscheid. The #5 Modified car of Umscheid Racing Services will now become the #07 car to reflect the Austin Wayne Self brand.
NASCAR recently lowered the age limit for drivers in its feature division (Division 1), which is the Modified class at Thunderhill Raceway. Since Austin’s fifteenth birthday is on March 5, opening day for the racing series, he is now able to join the Modified class. Austin and Umscheid Race Services will have the opportunity to compete for the Division 1 local, state and national titles and point fund awards.
“I’m stoked to have two rides this year, and I know we will be competitive right out of the box. I’ve only been in a Modified once in my life, and that was last weekend when Hogan Naumann let me drive his a few laps. It was sweet for sure,” says Self.
“We are looking forward to working with a talented driver like Austin, who has shown he can win in pretty much any type of car. This puts one of our cars in a great position to repeat as the Modified championship,” says J.C. Umscheid.
In 2010 Austin was named the TSRS Rookie of the Year in the Late Model stock car class, a season that included 3 first place finishes and 3rd overall in points. This year the TSRS Late Model stock cars are racing as a part of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series. This means that Austin will race in both the Late Model stock car and Modified classes in that series.
Austin’s NASCAR Whelen All-America Late Model stock car and Modified racing season opens Saturday, March 5 at Thunderhill Raceway in Kyle, Texas.
