Austin Wayne Self Wins Double Podiums at Memorial Twin 75s

In only his 3rd trip to Southern National Motor Sports Park, Austin Wayne Self Delivers for Fans and Sponsors

Fans filled the stands at Southern National Motorsports Park on Saturday night during racing’s biggest weekend of the year.  With a full car count in the NASCAR Late Model stock car class, the young 16-year-old driver from Austin, Texas once again proved to fans and sponsors why he is “NASCAR’s Most Popular Teenage Driver.”

“Our schedule has us racing a different track every weekend,” says Tim Self, President of AM Racing.  “I think everyone realizes that it’s going to be hard to show up at these tracks just 2 or 3 times and beat the local track Champions who are here every weekend. Especially when you’re racing against great veteran drivers like Deac McCaskill, C.E. Faulk, Greg Edwards and Peyton Sellers.”  “So when we can show up and everyone knows who you are, and that you are going to give the local drivers a run for their money, then that’s just a lot of fun for everyone.”

All that racing fun has translated to over 60,000 FB fans as more and more people want to learn who this young kid is and what he’s all about.

“We got caught up racing the 68 car in the first twin and had no chance of catching Deac in the end,” says Austin. “The 2-wide racing we were doing with Brandon (68) was a great show for the fans but it forced us to use up a little more tire than we wanted and we gave Deac the opportunity to check out. So we just had to ride, wait on a yellow that never came and settle for a 2nd place finish. We really thought we would have something for the 08 car (Deac) in the second twin. The changes we made during the break gave us perfect car. But I guess the 08 crew had some tricks of their own because they were even faster in the second race.”

“We made the decision to let the 05 car take the outside on the only restart of the race thinking that the two cars would use up some of their stuff racing each other. The 05 car didn’t have enough for the leader either and we ended up giving the spot up for nothing and getting a 3rd place. The crew could not have given me a better car than they did, the 07 Sport Clips Chevrolet was perfect.”

“When we show up at these tracks, one thing we don’t worry about is whether we are going to have anything for the leaders during the race. Austin picks these tracks up pretty quickly, and he definitely knows how to race with the best,” says Brian Rundstrom, Crew Chief for the 07 Sellers Chevrolet. “We spend most of our limited practice time setting up the car for race conditions and then struggle a little with qualifying. But today we did a great job qualifying. There is a good chance we would have put the 07 car on the pole if we would have gotten our 3rd qualifying lap (the officials made a mistake and flagged us after just 2 laps). Fulton, did a great job of calling the shots on tires and I don’t know that there is anything else the crew could have done to get the car better tonight. I think everyone on the team delivered their best here tonight and if we can take this level of performance to Motor Mile next Saturday night, we will have a good a chance to win there.”

“Thanks to all the fans for coming out and watching the show. It was another Great American Saturday Night at Southern National. Thanks to all of our Facebook and Twitter Fans who follow us wherever we go. Thanks to Sport Clips, Big Red, AM Technical Solutions, The Bridge School, K1 Race Gear and to Sellers Racing for all of their support. Thanks to Soldiers for Faith for all their prayers and most of all thank God for blessing me and the team, and having a hand in our races.”
