Watch Austin Wayne Self Chase the Taste in NBC Sports Network’s coverage of the Herr’s Chase the Taste 200 at Winchester Speedway

Austin’s second ARCA Racing Series appearance in the Herr’s Chase the Taste 200 will be broadcast on the NBC Sports Network this Thursday, August 1st at 11 p.m. ET. Don’t miss out on the intense racing action in one of the most exciting ARCA races of the 2013 season where Austin finished in second place. This was his second top 10 finish in the No. 22 Cunningham Motorsports AM Technical Solutions dodge after finishing 6th in his ARCA Racing Series debut.

During the race Austin worked hard to stay within the top 10 and by lap 80, he had made his way back up to the fourth place position. He was able to take four fresh tires and fuel during a pit stop on a caution lap. When the green flag dropped on the restart he gave the fans a show! During the restart on lap 146, Austin took the AMTS dodge three-wide for an exciting pass that moved him into the second position. He had his eye on race leader and needed to make a hard charge in attempts to catch him in the 10 race laps he had left.

“With a couple laps to go, I told myself I was either going to win this race or scrape the wall trying.” Self said.

Given a few more laps, Self would have loved the chance to take on the race winner bumper to bumper. Austin closed the gap to one car length by the end of the race and even though he didn’t quite catch the leader, he definitely gave him something to worry about.

“We ran an incredible race and given a few more laps we could have won. I learned so much and I just think we proved what a strong team we have. I really feel like we turned a lot of heads.” – AWS

Not only did Austin finish second in his second ARCA Racing Series appearance ever but, his impressive performance earned him the SCOTT Rookie Challenge Award. He became the 7th driver to win this award during the 2013 season, which is an incredible honor for the teen-age driver. This was a race Austin will never forget and one that you won’t want to miss!

To watch Austin charge to the front of the pack in the Herr’s Chase the Taste 200 coverage from June 30th, tune into NBC Sports Network this Thursday, August 1st at 11p.m. ET.

Top 10 at NJMP

After a dynamic and challenging day Austin Wayne Self leaves New Jersey Motorsports Park with a wealth of experience and top ten finish.

After missing qualifying on Saturday due to an engine change Austin Wayne Self was set to roll off the green 25th in Sunday’s ARCA series race. Austin commented, “I don’t mind starting from the back because then I get to pass a lot of cars.”

Austin most certainly passed cars during the race. The 22 AMTS Cunningham Motorsports Dodge moved from P25 to P10 within the first 15 laps of the race. Exampling intrepid race craft and talent, Austin maneuvered throughout the field and was soon P6 on his first ever road course race with the ARCA series. Even more impressively after further obstacles including a radio malfunction moved him again to the back of the field Austin regained position in the front pack. Austin finished the race P10 and reflected on the day. “Our car ran really strong and after the challenges we faced today we will only come back even stronger next time. I’m just really thankful for my team and everyone at Cunningham for working so hard this weekend.”

Approaching Indiana Austin Wayne Self set his sights high and most definitely delivered. “I really enjoy running double duty, it gives me more time in the race car and on the race track.” –AWS. In a double duty weekend Austin raced both Saturday in the #54 Scott Neal Dodge Super Late Model and Sunday in the #22 AMTS Cunningham Dodge in the ARCA Series. In the ARCA series Austin Wayne Self looked optimistically towards the front of the field and never dropped outside of the top 10 throughout the entire race. Upon catching P3 the caution came out, the 22 team pitted and fell back to 7th then raced their way back to P2. A late race caution came out with 20 laps to go, Self moved aggressively towards the front of the field and finished second in Sunday’s Herr’s Chase the Taste 200 after battling aggressively and showing intrepid race craft for a rookie against seasoned veterans. “I was somebody Frank had to worry about and keep behind him, I was able to learn from him and the next race he might have to worry about us. I think I earned a lot of respect from him, and he’s won 79 races, and I came out of no where so that was a major accomplishment. Cunningham gave me such a good car. We ran an incredible race and given a few more laps we could have won. I learned so much and I just think we proved what a strong team we have.” –AWS. Austin Wayne Self also was awarded the SCOTT Rookie Challenge; Self became the seventh driver to win a SCOTT Rookie Challenge race award in the 2013 season. This is an incredible honor for Austin who had this to say, “I really feel like we turned a lot of heads, and I can’t wait to get back out and get racing again.”-AWS
