Austin Wayne Self has busy weekend in Chicagoland return

JOLIET, Ill. – Determined to make their presence known in the second half of the NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series (NGOTS) schedule, Austin Wayne Self (@AustinWSelf) and his AM Racing team head to Chicagoland Speedway looking for a strong performance in Friday night’s Camping World 225.

Despite limited on-track time at World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway, Self and crew chief Eddie Troconis overcame early race handling woes to preserve for a 17th-place finish.

With his sixth top-20 finish in the books after his ninth start of the season, Self, a native of Austin, Texas is determined to up the ante under the Windy City lights.

“It’s a bummer that we had limited track time at Gateway last weekend,” Self recalled. “I really felt that if we had more practice and been able to qualify – we probably would have had a better finish in our No. 22 GO TEXAN | Flying Circle Chevrolet.

“But, as still a relatively new group, I think race by race we’re making progress and we’re going to make our presence known.”

Self returns to Chicagoland Speedway with a hectic schedule. In addition to his Truck Series duties this week in Joliet, Self will make his ARCA Menards Series return in a collaborative effort between AM Racing and Win-Tron Racing.

For Self, he believes the extra track time will pay dividends in the 12th Truck Series race of the season.

“I’m ready to embrace a busy weekend at Chicagoland, actually, it’s going to be really fun,” said Self. “It’s been almost two years since I’ve been in an ARCA car and I know that the Win-Tron Racing guys are bringing me a fast race car.

“I hope I can apply some of that on-track time back to the Truck with Eddie (Troconis) and vice-versa. It would be really awesome to come out of Chicagoland with strong finishes in both series to carry us into the summer stretch.”

The 23-year-old has three prior Truck Series start at Chicagoland, earning a track-best 13th last year after starting 15th. He has finished no worse than 20th dating back to his first appearance in 2016.

In two ARCA starts at Chicagoland, he finished a track-best 12th after starting fourth in 2015.

“Chicago’s surface is pretty abrasive which presents opportunities for good racing,” added Self. “it’s important to make sure your truck is handling good over the bumps so that you can carry the speed you need into the corners. That’s our mission during practice on Thursday to make sure our truck is maneuvering through the bumps and seams so that I can drive it and carry it off into the corner.”

Texas Department of Agriculture’s GO TEXAN program will support Self in his 72nd career start.

GO TEXAN, celebrating its 20th Birthday this year, represents Texas agri-business on state, national and international levels by building recognition with the GO TEXAN mark.

Along with its signature mark in the shape of Texas, GO TEXAN celebrates, promotes and supports the business savvy and plainspoken grit Texas agriculture is known for throughout the world.

AM Technical Solutions, Don’t mess with Texas, CForce Bottling Company, Flying Circle and Kreuz Market will serve as associate partners in the 12th race of the year.

In 72 NGOTS races, the 2014 ARCA Menards Series Rookie of the Year has one top-five (second at Daytona 2017) and five top-10 finishes. The Texan maintains an average finish of 18.3 during his three years of competition.

The Austin, Texas native is nestled 15th in the championship standings with 12 races remaining.

Austin Wayne Self; AM Racing reach halfway point at Gateway

MADISON, Ill. – Approaching the halfway point of the NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series (NGOTS) season, Austin Wayne Self (@AustinWSelf) and his AM Racing team are encouraged by the direction of their team heading into Saturday night’s CarShield 200 presented by CK Power.

With the leadership of crew chief Eddie Troconis, the Mooresville, N.C.-based team has steadily proven they have fast Chevrolet Silverados and while obstacles have certainly hindered the team at times during the season, Gateway provides the opportunity for the team to collectively earn their second top-10 finish of the season.

“Gateway is a very unique race track with two different corners almost like a road course,” said Austin Wayne Self. “The hot conditions during the day and cool nights make the perfect setup hard to find but I look forward to getting to the track this weekend, finding some speed and having a good finish.”

Self, 23, has two prior starts at the 1.25-mile track just outside St. Louis. After experiencing hardship during his Gateway debut in 2016, he rebounded last year with a solid 16th place finish after starting 25th.

This weekend, Self believes he has the equipment to deliver his sixth-career top-10 finish.

“Eddie and I have done a lot of talking and I feel like we have a good baseline on where we want to be for practice and how we want to start the race,” Self added. “It’s going to be a game of strategy while also making sure our truck is handling pretty good where you can carry the momentum to make passes at both ends of the race track.

The track is wide enough in some places where passing can be easy, in others, it’s small enough where it can get you in trouble. That provides good racing though for the fans.”

For Gateway, AM Racing welcomes back Texas-based Flying Circle as the co-primary partner for Saturday night’s 160-lap slugfest.

As a trusted supplier of military specialty and travel bags to the U.S. Armed Forces for 30 years, Flying Circle’s mission is to provide service members and their families with dependable, functional, and versatile luggage.  The company is known within the military community for their commitment to offering quality products at a fair value and excellent customer service.

Capitalizing on their partnership with AM Racing, Flying Circle is offering exclusive prize packages to service members and their family at select Army and Air Force Exchange Stores during the 2019 season.

Visit flyingcirclegear.com/nascar-giveaways for dates and participating stores. While registering for a chance to win, customers can also check out the latest Flying Circle gear and pick up a free Austin Wayne Self hero card. A VIP prize package winner will be chosen from each store, which includes official Flying Circle swag, AM Racing swag and a complimentary VIP experience with Self during the 2019 Gander Truck Series season.

“I love what Flying Circle does for the veterans and their families and I appreciate their support of AM Racing,” added Self. “We’ve had a lot of success with the giveaways and look forward to seeing their customers and our military heroes at the track with me this year.”

Texas Department of Agriculture’s GO TEXAN program will support Self in his 72nd career start.

Austin Wayne Self upbeat about Iowa Speedway return

NEWTON, Iowa. – Continuing to showcase speed in his No. 22 AM Racing Chevrolet Silverado, NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series driver Austin Wayne Self (@AustinWSelf) heads to Iowa Speedway hoping luck will prevail and his team can capture their second top-10 finish together in Saturday night’s M&M’s 200.

Last week at Texas Motor Speedway, Self’s No. 22 United Sorghum Checkoff Program Chevrolet battled all night for a top-10 finish – but an electrical failure late in the race derailed the team’s outing and left more to be desired approaching the halfway point of the 2019 season.

“I’m looking forward to getting back to some short track racing after a few weeks on big tracks,” said Self. “We’ve had a lot of speed in our Chevrolet Silverados over the last month or so, we just haven’t been able for one reason or another to have the finishes to showcase our ability.

“Hopefully, Saturday night everything will fall into place and we can have a good effort and give our team a much-welcomed boost.”

Self, 23, will make his fourth start at the 0.875-mile short track. In his three previous efforts, he has two top-16 finishes including a track-best of 15th earned last June after starting 19th.

“Pretty stoked to have IceBox Helmet Coolers onboard for this weekend at Iowa,” added Self. “I’ve been fortunate enough to use the product and it’s one of the best helmet coolers I’ve ever had or seen. It’s going to come in handy this summer when the temperatures peak.”

Austin Wayne Self saddles up for Texas Motor Speedway return

FORT WORTH, Tex. – With spring break in the rearview mirror, Austin Wayne Self (@AustinWSelf) and his AM Racing team head to Texas Motor Speedway looking for their second top-10 finish together in Friday night’s SpeedyCash.com 400.

Self will make his seventh NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series (NGOTS) start at the 1.5-mile track but eyes his first top-10 at his hometown track.

In his previous six starts, Self has maneuvered a best finish of 12th in 2017 – but has also finished inside the top-20 five times.

Eager to get back to the race track, Self hopes the standalone Texas race brings the opportunity to earn his sixth career top-10 Gander Outdoors Truck Series finish.

“Super excited to get back to Texas Motor Speedway,” said Self. “We’ve been working hard on our Texas truck the last few weeks. Texas means so much to me being the track I grew up watching races and also have the support United Sorghum Checkoff Program along with GO TEXAN.

“Always a big week when we show up in the home state.”

For the ninth NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series (NGOTS) race of the year and second time this season, AM Racing will carry the brand of the United Sorghum Checkoff Program, while also commemorating GO TEXAN and their 20th-year celebration.

Sorghum is the world’s fifth-most important grain crop and is grown on approximately 100 million acres worldwide, including approximately six million acres in the U.S. Currently, Texas and Kansas account for 80 percent of U.S. sorghum production.

The Sorghum Checkoff focuses on developing direct awareness of the benefits of using sorghum as a fuel and feedstock in the ethanol industry and urges consumers to choose E15 at the pumps. Ethanol serves as the foundation of demand for the sorghum industry, as ethanol producers typically use about one-third of the sorghum crop to produce clean-burning, high octane fuel.

The Sorghum Checkoff program was introduced to AM Racing through GO TEXAN who is celebrating its third year of partnership with the team and serving as the primary partner on AM Racing’s truck for a majority of the 2019 season.

“The Sorghum Checkoff program has been fantastic and I’m looking forward to having them back on the truck this weekend,” added Self. “They always embrace their experience at the race track and I’d like to reward them for their continued support with our best finish of the season.”

The 23-year-old Self also hopes his final visit to the Lone Star state this season will provide the chance to get his AM Racing track back on track after a two-race slide at Kansas and Charlotte respectively.

“Texas is the perfect place to get our year back on track,” Self added. “Texas is so fun to race. The new Turn 1 and 2 is almost like a road course corner, where you can overdrive it easy. It makes for some really good racing and makes you think about your passing opportunities. It’s going to be a good show on Friday night, and I can’t wait to get there.”

The United Sorghum Checkoff Program and Texas Department of Agriculture’s GO TEXAN program will support Self in his 70th career start.
